External Reporting Mode is for radiologists and facilities who report studies using their own RIS, EMR, or dictation system — but still want those studies tracked and completed within AlemHealth Connect.
Instead of writing reports directly in AlemHealth, you can:
- Paste your report text from your own system
- Upload a report document (Word or PDF)
- Mark the study as reported without uploading anything (when the report lives in your facility's system)
This ensures your worklist stays clean, SLA tracking remains accurate, and your facility administrators have full visibility — even when the report itself was generated elsewhere.
When to Use External Reporting
Choose External Reporting Mode if you:
- Prefer to report in your own RIS or EMR
- Use voice dictation software that outputs to a local system
- Need to track study completion in AlemHealth, but your reports live in another system
- Work at a facility that uses AlemHealth for DICOM routing and study distribution, but not for report writing
How to Enable External Reporting Mode
- Open any study from your worklist
- Click Report to open the reporting panel
In the Reporting Style picker, select External Reporting
- You'll see the description: "Manage studies reported outside the platform"
- Below that: "Best if you prefer reporting in your own LIS/EMR/PHR"
The reporting panel will switch to External Reporting view
Tip: Your reporting style selection is remembered. Once you select External Reporting, it stays selected for future studies until you change it.
Three Ways to Complete a Study
Once in External Reporting Mode, you have three options:
Option 1: Paste Report Text
- In the "Paste report text" field, paste or type the final report from your external system
- Click Complete Study
- The report text is saved to the study record and visible to referring physicians and facility administrators
Option 2: Upload a Report Document
- Click Choose File or drag and drop a Word (.docx) or PDF (.pdf) document
- The document will be attached to the study
- Click Complete Study
Option 3: Mark as Reported (No Upload)
- Check the box: "Complete study without reporting here"
- This is for cases where the report exists in your facility's system and doesn't need to be copied into AlemHealth
- This is for cases where the report exists in your facility's system and doesn't need to be copied into AlemHealth
- Click Complete Study
- The study will be marked as "Reported (M)" on the worklist — the "(M)" indicates it was manually marked as reported
Note: You can combine options — for example, paste the report text AND upload the original document for reference.
What Happens After You Complete a Study
- The study status changes to Reported (M) on the worklist
- The assignment is marked as marked_as_reported
- If you pasted text, the report is viewable by anyone with access to the study
- If you uploaded a document, it's attached to the study record
- SLA timers stop — the study is considered completed
If you need to add a report to a study that's already marked as reported (e.g., you initially just marked it, but now want to attach the actual report), you can reopen the study and use the "Add report to study" button.
External Reporting on Mobile
External Reporting Mode also works on the mobile view. The same three options (paste text, upload document, mark as reported) are available in the mobile reporting panel.
FAQs
Q: Can I switch between External Reporting and AI Reporting?
A: Yes. You can change your reporting style at any time from the Reporting Style picker. Switching styles does not affect previously completed studies.
Q: Will studies reported externally appear in QA/QC?
A: Studies with pasted report text will be evaluated by the QA/QC system. Studies that are only "marked as reported" without report text will not be scored.
Q: Can facility administrators see which studies were reported externally?
A: Yes. Studies reported externally show as "Reported (M)" on the worklist, making them easy to identify.
