Radiologist Pools let administrators group radiologists into named teams with workload limits. Pools make it easy to assign studies to a group rather than a single person, balance workload across your team, and manage coverage for different specialties or shifts.
Who Is This For?
Radiologist Pools is an admin feature designed for:
- Facility administrators managing a team of in-house radiologists
- Teleradiology group managers coordinating across multiple radiologists and providers
- Multi-facility organizations that need specialty-based or shift-based team structures
Key Concepts
- Pool: A named group of radiologists with a shared workload cap. Example: "Neuro Team A" or "Night Shift Coverage."
- Members: The radiologists and providers assigned to a pool. Members can be internal (your organization), external (linked from other orgs), or teleradiology providers.
- RVU Cap: The maximum RVU (Relative Value Unit) workload the pool should handle concurrently. This is a safety limit to prevent overloading the team. Typical values: 10–15 for specialized pools (neuro, emergency), 20–30 for general/routine pools.
- Active/Inactive: Pools can be toggled on or off. Inactive pools are not available for study routing.

AI-Suggested Pool Structures
Not sure how to organize your team? AlemHealth Connect can suggest pool groupings based on your radiologist roster — their specialties, modalities, and schedules.
- On the Radiologist Pools page, click Suggest Pools.
- The system analyzes your roster and proposes pool configurations.
- Review the suggestions, select the ones you want, and click to create them in bulk.
Suggestions are a starting point — you can edit any auto-created pool afterward.
How Pools Work with Study Assignment
- When assigning a study, you can select a pool instead of an individual radiologist.
- Studies assigned to a pool appear as "Assigned to Pool" with a green tag in the worklist.
- The pool's RVU cap helps prevent any single team from being overloaded.
- Individual radiologists within the pool can pick up studies from the pool's queue.
Member Details in the Pool Editor
When adding members, you can see key information for each radiologist:
- Specialties — Clinical specialties (e.g., Neuroradiology, General)
- Modalities — Certified imaging types (CT, MR, XR, US, MG)
- Schedule — Availability windows (days and hours)
- Status — Current availability (available, on break, routine only)
This helps you build well-balanced pools with appropriate specialty and schedule coverage.
Tips
- A radiologist can belong to multiple pools — useful for covering both general and specialty workloads.
- Set the RVU cap conservatively at first and adjust based on actual throughput.
- Use the Active/Inactive toggle to temporarily disable a pool (e.g., during holidays) without deleting it.
- Pool management is scoped to your organization — you can only add radiologists affiliated with your group.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a radiologist be in more than one pool?
Yes. A radiologist can be a member of multiple pools simultaneously.
What happens if I delete a pool that has active assignments?
Studies already assigned to the pool remain assigned. The pool is removed from future assignment options. We recommend reassigning active studies before deleting a pool.
Do I need to set up pools to use AlemHealth Connect?
No. Pools are optional. You can continue assigning studies to individual radiologists. Pools are most useful when managing teams of 3+ radiologists.
Can non-admin users create or edit pools?
Pool management is available to both admin and non-admin users with appropriate permissions. Check with your organization's admin if you don't see the Radiologist Pools menu item.
What is the AI suggestion feature based on?
The AI analyzes your roster's specialties, modalities, and schedule patterns to propose logical groupings. It uses Google Gemini when configured, or provides template suggestions as a starting point.
